# WA Agritourism Association — the full marketing function for a state sector body

## The situation

The Western Australia Agritourism Association is the state body for farm businesses that host visitors — cellar doors, farm gates, farm stays, u-picks and on-farm experiences. Like most sector associations, it runs on a small budget and the time its board and members can give it.

It needed the things every membership body needs and few can afford: somewhere to send people, a way to talk to members regularly, a presence that looks like the sector it represents, and a plan the board could actually work to.

## How the engagement works

This is not a paid client engagement. Andy Burns sits on the WAAA board, and Scott Aussie Tourism Marketing is a listed sponsor of the association. The marketing work below is what SATM contributes under that sponsorship — the cost is carried by SATM rather than invoiced to WAAA. It is published here with the association's knowledge and agreement.

## Why it matters to our clients

Agritourism operators are a real part of who we work for, and they are the group least likely to think of themselves as a tourism business. Sitting on the board of the state association — and running its marketing — means we are working on the sector's problems, not just reading about them.

It is also the reason we can be direct with a grower about what is worth doing and what is not. We see what is working across a lot of farm businesses, not one.
